Royal Albert Hall

Portcullis was recommended by a colleague of the Royal Albert Hall’s head of maintenance after they lost faith in their previous maintenance and security service provider.

About the Project

The main issue was with the stage delivery gate under the hall, 5 metres tall, 8 metres wide and weighing around two tonnes it was too heavy for normal manual use and became a logistical nightmare. It was originally powered by an ageing control system which had no safety features and kept breaking down, rendering it unusable.

Portcullis provided in-depth site surveys, which led us to recommend a full overhaul of the existing gate and its hydraulic control system. As a result, a new power pack hydraulic pump system with manual override was installed, including all-new control cables and new control boards.

To further improve the safety on the gate, a bump strip protection was added to ensure the gate would stop immediately if an obstruction was detected.

For one week every year, the Royal Albert Hall is closed to allow for maintenance, which is when we carried out our installation and security improvements. Portcullis continues to provide maintenance for the gate, under our pre-planned maintenance agreement.

We are proud of our long-term relationship with the Royal Albert Hall, and their continued use of our service is a testament to our sustained investment into our staff and our abilities as a leading automation company in the UK.

        About the Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall was built to fulfil the vision of Prince Albert of a ‘Central Hall’ that would be used to promote understanding and appreciation of the Arts and Sciences. The Hall is a Grade I Listed building and has been in continuous use since it was opened in March 1871.

It has housed the world’s leading figures in music, dance, sport and politics since they opened. Over 1.7 million enjoy live experiences at the Hall every year. It is a registered charity held in trust for the nation but is financially self-sufficient and receives no funding from the government.
